Scientists have discovered how to make animals turn invisible, but on their first human test-subject they are unable to reverse the process. However being invisible proves to have some advantages for the increasingly psychotic Sebastian Caine. Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth Shue star. An entertaining spin on H.G. Well's The Invisible Man sees (or not) Kevin Bacon turn first invisible and then psychotic. Bacon plays Sebastian Caine, a scientific genius who assembles chemicals like lego. He has a touch of the megalomaniac about him at the best of times so when a failed experiment makes him completely invisible, he leaves his conscience at the door and goes about "getting away" with things he'd never normally be aloud to. Given that the film is directed by the man behind Basic Instinct, Showgirls and Starship Troopers , it doesn't take a genius to work out where the plot goes next. Cue violence, gore and invisible hands fondling places they shouldn't. Unfortunately, the plot - which starts off well - descends into monster-on-the-loose territory as the scientists get bumped off one by one. However the plot is unimportant whenever the special effects kick in as they are genuinely spectacular. For starters, Bacon turns invisible layer-by-layer, turning into a living, breathing anatomical model. Later on, his fellow scientists attempt to seek him out using all kinds of cunning ways - his invisible face makes an appearance in smoke, blood, water etc. It's superbly done and easily makes up for the films other plot holes (or invisible patches - you decide).
