Recorded on a four-track machine in the artist's bedroom, David Gray's White Ladder has all the hallmarks of a cult classic. After a promising debut in 1993 with A Century Ends, David's career went into freefall and he began to lose direction. The idea behind White Ladder was to capture the songs instinctively, so that they were as close as possible to the moment of creative inspiration; in his own words "an unedited bit of the soul". The result is a timeless collection of tracks which invites many comparisons whilst defying easy categorisation. It is difficult to imagine less cluttered music; this is one man, a guitar and a drum machine, with just a little bit of help from his friends. Without elaborate production and multi-faceted orchestral arrangements to hide behind, there is a sharper focus on the elemental art of making music. There is not a weak link in the album, although with the wonderful Babylon it reaches a folk-tinged pinnacle, and there is a rendition of Soft Cell's Say Hello, Wave Goodbye which is strangely enhanced by the acoustic melancholia. By reverting to stylistic simplicity, David Gray has created an album which, on artistic merit, may well place him alongside the likes of Bob Dylan and Van Morrison. A credit to the man himself. Score (5 / 5) A fantastic album, very original and a song for every mood. Babylon is a favourite but 'Sail Away' and 'This Year's Love' are also brilliantly written, would certainly recommend.
