Coldplay and Ms Dynamite took two awards each, and made use of the occasion to protest against the possibility of war in the Gulf. Kylie Minogue and Justin Timberlake gave an extremely raunchy performance of Blondie's Rapture , while other live appearances included Avril Lavigne and this year's winner of the Outstanding Contribution award, Tom Jones , who finished the show with a medley of his biggest hits. Thomas Jones Woodward was singing with his band Tommy Scott and the Senators in the working mens clubs of South Wales until his 1965 release It's Not Unusual hit number one and catapulted him into the limelight where he has remained ever since. In his sixties heyday he had a string of hits including Delilah , What's New Pussycat?, Green Green Grass Of Home and the Bond theme Thunderball . With his full throated baritone voice and unrestrainedly sexual live act, he attracted a huge following of female fans, renowned for throwing their knickers onto the stage during gigs. Tom has remained in the mainstream ever since, with a regular place on the Las Vegas cabaret circuit and as a close friend of Elvis Presley in the seventies, a comeback with eighties electronic pioneers Art Of Noise and the 1999 success of his chart-topping Reload album of collaborations with acts as diverse as Van Morrison , Mousse-T and Stereophonics . Although he already has one Brit Award, for Best British Male Solo Artist in 2000, and was even awarded an OBE in 1999, this year his four decades in the music industry are being recognised with the Brits' Outstanding Contribution to British Music award.
