Part one is devoted to developing fluency in reading by note, the biggest hurdle for most young children. The range is purposely limited. Only five notes up and five notes down from middle C are presented and time values do not go beyond crotchets. Each book of the course contains its own writing exercises, sightreading drills, review work and later, technical studies. Accompaniments for teacher or parent are supplied with most of the examples. Rating Review Having used this piano method for many years, I have found it to be a comprehensive and fun piano method for young children. This revised edition of the series brings lessons to life with the colour illustrations which highlight useful information. Part 1 guides the student through the demanding nature of reading music and understanding the keyboard. It proceeds at a good pace which allows the student to assimilate the information presented at each stage, and put into practice what is being taught. - Debbie All children learning the piano will enjoy this method. Includes theory exercises, games and great tunes. - Neil Kent Unfortunately I only gave this a 1 star rate due to the paper the tutor is printed on. It's shiny and is very difficult to erase pencil markings on the worksheets - makes for a very untidy page!! Also in Book 1 there is an error on page 19, fourth line down of the third worksheet, the bass clef line, the dashes do not correspond with the notes. Other than this the Book 1 is an excellent introduction to playing the piano for a beginner of any age. I do wish though that when scales are introduced they are introduced in two octaves, a requirement for all examination boards in England. Why has nobody picked up on this? I like the layout of the page, and the useful information and reinforcement of recognizing the notes, but why is there no sign of the song Happy Birthday - this must be the most important song in the whole world, yet very few tutoring books introduce it at an early stage.
