You are in the DVD warehouse Leading Ladies...Julia Roberts Julia Roberts is one of Hollywood’s leading ladies and commands the highest of salaries for the blockbuster smashes she appears in. From her first early appearances in the late 80’s she’s not always been taken seriously as a dramatic actress until more recently. She is also the envy of women around the globe and not just because of her good looks, she has starred alongside some of Hollywood’s most gorgeous men including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Richard Gere, Liam Neeson, Hugh Grant and Matt Damon to name but a few! Check out some of our Julia favourites… Leading Ladies... ...Demi Moore ...Sharon Stone ...Cameron Diaz ...Drew Barrymore ...Marilyn Monroe ...Jodie Foster ...Sigourney Weaver ...Nicole Kidman America's Sweethearts Directed by Joe Roth , one of Julia’s longtime friends, this romantic comedy sees her playing Kiki, the ‘until recently a lot fatter’ sister of movie superstar Gwen ( Katherine Zeta-Jones ). Gwen has recently split from hubbie Eddie ( John Cusack ) after finding a latin lover Hector ( Hank Azaria ) but the couple have to be reunited, in front of the press at least, to promote their recent film. Billy Crystal stars a Lee, the movie publicist, who is desperately trying the keep the ex-couple from killing each other to ensure the success of the movie. Lee enlists the help of Kiki in his campaign for movie success and it slowly becomes apparent that Kiki has been harbouring feelings for the her ex brother-in-law Eddie. Lighthearted and predictable, this is Hollywood romantic comedy at it’s best. Notting Hill Julia plays herself! As Anna Scott, Julia plays an internationally successful movie actress who surprisingly falls for a book shop owner in Notting Hill, William Thacker (played by Hugh Grant ). Their romance begins only to be abruptly interrupted by Anna’s Hollywood boyfriend Jeff King ( Alec Baldwin ) who makes a surpise visit from the States. Following the release of some very old and explicit nude pictures in the press Anna takes refuge in the only place she thinks the press won’t find her – William’s Notting Hill flat. Again their romance is interrupted when she accuses William of informing the press of her whereabouts and returns to America. When she finally sees William again and asks that they start over William is reluctant to risk his heart once more and sends her away only to realise that he has made a terrible mistake. This is Julia doing what she does best – the romantic comedy. Ocean's Eleven This is a remake of the 1960 Rat Pack favourite. George Clooney plays Danny Ocean, fresh out of prison and with a new plan. Ocean’s ex-girlfriend Tess ( Julia Roberts ) is now dating casino mogul Terry Benedict ( Andy Garcia ) and Ocean’s new plan involves robbing Benedicts casinos, apparently nothing to do with desire to get back with Tess. To assist with this mammoth task Ocean recruits a team of experts played by all star cast Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Elliott Gould, and Casey Affleck amongst others. A great movie made even better by the gorgeous all star cast. Pretty Woman The movie that made Julia a star is a fantastic romantic comedy in which she stars alongside Richard Gere as Sunset boulevard prostitute Vivian Ward. In the ultimate fairy tale story, Edward Lewis Gere )invites Vivian to stay with him for the week he is at the Beverly Hills Hotel as his date. Funding a full makeover and wardrobe transformation Vivian turns from prostitute to princess with the help of staff at the hotel and Edwards millions. As with all good fairy tales when the week comes to end and Vivian leaves her prince comes to her rescue. The Mexican Petty criminal Jerry ( Brad Pitt ) is nagged by his girlfriend Samantha ( Julia Roberts ) into giving up his criminal lifestyle. Before Jerry is allowed to give up his criminal past forever the local mob insist he does one last job in Mexico to recover a rare pistol. Jerry finds the pistol but has come incredulous difficulties in trying to return to the States and the mob, suspecting foul play, kidnap his girlfriend Samantha to ‘encourage’ him to come back quicker. The hit man Leroy ( James Gandolphini ) soon befriends his hostage Samantha and this quirky, at times slap-stick comedy comes to a predictable end. Well worth a look as the first time that Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts star together. Runaway Bride This sees Julia reunited with Pretty Woman co-star Richard Gere and director Gerry Marshall for more romantic comedy. Julia plays commitment phobe Maggie who has left so many men at the alter that reporter Ike Graham ( Richard Gere ) is assigned to write a story about her. Maggie begins to have second thoughts about marrying her current fiancé which are fuelled by the arrival of Ike. An obvious attempt to recreate the chemistry of Pretty Woman , which at times tries too hard but this was none the less a big box office smash and succeeds in being a predictable feel-good movie. Flatliners A supernatural thriller about a group of brilliant medical students, who decide to literally tamper with life and death. Bringing themselves as close to death as possible before being revived the students get to experience a little of what the afterlife might bring, but it is one of the students Nelson ( Kiefer Sutherland ) who becomes obsessed with the notion of really dying and takes it too far. The movie also stars Kevin Bacon and William Baldwin and saw the start of the much publicized off screen romance between Kiefer and Julia . The movie is an excellent supernatural thriller with an all star cast – definitely work a look. Sleeping With The Enemy A chilling thriller about battered wife Laura (played by Julia ). Her rich husband Martin ( Patrick Bergin ) abuses his wife for not keeping the house as clean as he would like and the verbal abuse quickly turns into physical violence. When it all becomes too much Laura decides to fake her own death to escape Martin and relocates and changes her name to Sara Waters. She begins a relationship with new neighbour Ben ( Kevin Anderson ). The tranquillity of her new life is soon shattered when Martin discovers the truth about her death and sets about trying to get his wife back. Something To Talk About Julia plays Grace, the prim small town wife of Eddie ( Dennis Quaid ) whose world turns upside down when she discovers that her husband is having an affair and not for the first time. After publicly humiliating her husband she moves in with her sister Emma ( Kyra Sedgwick ) and is outraged to discover that her parents are siding with Eddie. It’s not until Grace’s mother discovers that her husband has been having a long term affair and kicks him out that Grace gets any sympathy. The whole family become embroiled in a battle of the sexes. An exceptional caste leads this female empowerment movie written by Thelma and Louise creator Callie Khouri . Steel Magnolias Set in a Louisiana beauty parlour where the all female cast talk, laugh and cry about their experiences of life and love. The all star female cast ( Dolly Parton, Sally Fields, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah ) completely overshadows any male characters that are included (although their were no males in the original theatre production) but this takes nothing away from the film. Julia Roberts plays the daughter of Sally Fields’ character and the story ultimately builds around her. A great tear-jerker often compared to Terms of Endearment.
