He is the definitive Western Director. After working his way around the film industry he rose up through the ranks becoming Director in 1917 at the tender age of 22 making dozens of Westerns during the 1920’s, but it wasn’t until the 1930’s that he hit the major league gaining several Oscar nominations and awards. He diversified in the 1940’s with war films and the 'cavalry trilogy' which is essential Ford viewing, try part one of the trilogy, Fort Apache and you won't be able to resist watching the other two. Directors... ...Ridley Scott ...James Cameron ...Quentin Tarantino ...Stanley Kubrik ...Woody Allen ...Martin Scorsese ...Tim Burton ...Steven Spielberg ...Directors Cuts Fort Apache In part one of the cavalry trilogy John Wayne stars as Captain Kirby York with Henry Fonda as Lt. Col Owen Thursday. Thursday installs excessive discipline on Fort Apache and is anxious to do battle with the local Indians, despite York insisting that the trouble around the fort is being caused by white agents and not the Indians. Thursday eventually confronts the Indian chief Cochise and he and his men are slaughtered. The local press turn this incident into a feat of cavalry courage and although York knows the truth he remains loyal to the cavalry. She Wore A Yellow Ribbon John Wayne plays cavalry captain Nathan Brittles who is attempting to prevent a major attack by Arapahos Indians before his forthcoming retirement commences, in the second part of the 'Cavalry Trilogy'. After some minor battles and victories Nathan rides into the Arapahos camp to smoke the pipe of peace with his old friend Chief Pony That Walks ( Chief John Big Tree ). The Academy Award winning photography and John Wayne’s flawless performance make this movie a classic. Rio Grande As part three of the cavalry trilogy, this film is considered by many as the best of the three. Wayne stars as Lt. Yorke whose son is assigned to the same post as him. Determined not to show any family favouritism Yorke shows no signs of fatherly affection towards his son whatsoever. Adding to Yorke’s exasperation, his estranged wife Kathleen ( Maureen O’Hara ) appears at the post to care for her son. After an apache attack Yorke orders the women and children to evacuate the post and insists his son leads the evacuation. Seeing this as a sign of affection for their son, Kathleen’s heart is warmed towards her husband. There are many further plot complications before the inevitable family reunion can take place. How Green Was My Valley This film is the story of a Welsh mining family spanning 50 years. The story is told through the eyes of the youngest child ( Roddy McDowall ) as the family battle with the changes disrupting their lives and the community in which they live. Winning five Oscars in 1941, this affectionate tale highlights the effects of industry modernisation on small town life and the message remains poignant even today. The Quiet Man Another Ford movie outside of his usual Western genre, with John Wayne starring as an ex Irish-American boxer who returns to his hometown to bury the past after killing a man in the ring. Wayne purchases the home of his birth and promptly falls for a high spirited local girl who insists on any courtship being carried out in a traditional manner, which includes having a chaperone. This, amongst other things including the would-be Brides brothers disapproval, hampers proceedings. Eventually there is nothing left for the ex-boxer to do but fight for his bride, which unsurprisingly results in an extended fight scene and a happy ending for all concerned. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Ford and John Wayne reunited for what is essentially a Western love story. In 1910 US Senator Ransom Stoddard ( James Stewart ) and his wife Hallie return to their hometown to attend the funeral of a ‘nobody’ and a flashback commences. As a young lawyer Stoddard had upset a notorious gunman Liberty Valance ( Lee Marvin ) and Doniphon ( Wayne ) had stepped in and saved his life on numerous occasions. Doniphon had fallen in love with Hallie, but Hallie was in love with Stoddard and Doniphon, resigned to his fate, vowed to protect Hallie’s happiness even if he couldn’t have her for himself. Stoddard is forced to stand up to Valance in a shoot out and much to the surprise of the town succeeds. This notoriety propels Stoddard into politics which he finds difficult to accept on the basis of killing a man until Doniphon confesses in strictest confidence that he shot Valance and not Stoddard thus allowing ‘good man’ Stoddard to continue his political career. Searchers John Wayne plays Ethan Edwards who returns to his brothers home 3 years after the end of the civil war with no explanation of where he’s been. He joins a band of Texan rangers with his nephew to fend off Comanche attacks and before their defeat several homes are attacked and Ethan returns to discover his brother and sister-in-law are dead and their two daughters have been kidnapped. Ethan and his nephew then learn that only one of the sisters is alive and they spend the next five years trying to find her. John Wayne gives one of his finest performances.
