You are in the DVD warehouse Directors...Tim Burton Burton started out his movie career as an apprentice animator for Disney. Not quite fitting in to the Disney mould, Burton's first couple of animations were met with a mediocre reception at best. After leaving Disney Burton got his first break directing Pee Wee's Big Adventure (1985), which thanks to Burton's 'looney tune' style direction became a surprise big hit for Warner Bros. The success of this led to Beetlejuice (1988) and the big budget Batman (1989) which put Burton on the map as an A list director. Although the subject matter of his movies varies dramatically his films tend to have a fairy tale and fantastical feel to them. Check out our selection of Burton's films and see for yourself... Directors... ...Ridley Scott ...Steven Spielberg ...Quentin Tarantino ...Stanley Kubrik ...Woody Allen ...Martin Scorsese ...James Cameron ...John Ford ...Directors Cuts Planet of the Apes 'Re-imagining' of the 1968 original starring Mark Wahlberg as 21st Century astronaut Captain Leo Davidson on board a space station with genetically enhanced monkeys who are being trained to go into space. When one of the monkeys is lost in a strange space storm Leo goes out to investigate and crashes on a strange planet where the monkeys are in charge and the humans are slaves, and Leo ends up reluctantly leading a rebellion against the monkeys. Sleepy Hollow Burton favourite Johnny Depp stars as a 19th Century New York detective who is sent to investigate a series of unusual murders in the small backwater of Sleepy Hollow . On arrival he discovers that the locals believe that the ghost of the Headless Horseman is responsible for the killings, and to satisfy himself (and to win the heart of local girl Katrina, played by Christina Ricci ) as much as the locals he must find the killer and a logical explanation for what is happening. A sumputous gothic thriller. Mars Attacks! Quirky comedy sci-fi in the style of the alien invasion movies of the 50's and 60's. Flying saucers have been circling the earth and seen around the world and the President of the United States ( Jack Nicholson ) is advised that the alien invasion is likely to be peaceful, although the military would like to destroy them. When the aliens land they initially appear to be friendly and cheerful, but looks can be deceiving... Batman The first of the Batman movies in which Michael Keaton plays the caped crusader protecting the streets of a dark and dirty Gotham City from his disfigured arch rival The Joker ( Jack Nicholson ). Kim Basinger plays the love interest, reporter Vicki Vale. This excellent super hero tale is based more on the graphic novels of Frank Miller than on the original DC Comics. Batman Returns This sequel sees our caped crusader (still played by Michael Keaton ) battle against the combined efforts of no less than 3 rivals - the hideously deformed Penguin ( Danny De Vito ), evil businessman Max Schreck ( Christopher Walken ) and Schreck's mousy secretary ( Michelle Pfeiffer ) who magically transforms into Catwoman. Edward Scissorhands When a mad inventor dies suddenly in his mansion, no one realises he has left behind a not quite complete synthetic boy (his hands are made of scissors), played by Johnny Depp , until the Avon Lady Peg Boggs ( Dianne Weist ) comes to call. Despite his scissor hands Peg adopts the boy finding him gentle and kind, and he soon becomes an 'attraction' in the local community. This is Burton's fairytale story telling at it's very best. Beetlejuice Newly weds Adam and Barbara ( Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis ) are killed in a car accident but find on arrival in at the gates of Heaven that there is a queue to get in! In order to get their wings they are told they must haunt their old house for 50 years, which is now occupied by a yuppie couple. Not being experienced at haunting they call in an expert ghost Beetlejuice ( Michael Keaton ) who promptly falls in love with the yuppie couple's daughter Lydia ( Winona Ryder ) and causes chaos as a result.
