Scorsese has many awards to his name including a Lifetime Achievement Award (1997) from the American Film Institute. Check out our selection of Scorsese movies to understand why he is one of the greatest filmmakers of our time...and dont' miss the chance to own one of the best gangster movies of all time, Goodfellas . Directors... ...Ridley Scott ...James Cameron ...Quentin Tarantino ...Stanley Kubrik ...Woody Allen ...Steven Spielberg ...Tim Burton ...John Ford ...Directors Cuts Bringing Out The Dead Starring Nicholas Cage this 1999 movie tells the story of a paramedic on the brink of nervous breakdown after years of working in one of New Yorks toughest neighbourhoods. Haunted by the spirits of patients he was unable to save, he seeks salvation in the arms of the daughter ( Patricia Arquette ) of one of his patients, and begins on the road to recovery. Kundun The story of a two year old boy who is identified as the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama and sent to a monastery for training as monk and head of state. At the age of 14 the Chinese invade the peaceful Tibet and the Dalai Lama is forced into coalition with Mao, until the coalition eventually turns to a siege and the boy is forced to leave Tibet for the sanctuary of India in 1959. Casino A spectacular gangster movie charting the rise and fall of the mafia as they moved in on Vegas during the 70’s. Starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Sharon Stone , this movie shows the glamour and glitz of Vegas and the hard edge that bubbles just underneath the surface. Sharon Stone received an Oscar nomination and won a Golden Globe Award for what is undoubtedly the performance of her career. The Age of Innocence Adaptation of a 1920’s Edith Wharton novel set in 19th Century New York, this is the story of forbidden love between an upper class gentleman ( Daniel Day-Lewis ) and a scandalised lady ( Michelle Pfeiffer ). Forced to do the honourable thing and marry the dutiful but unexciting May ( Winona Ryder ), Newton Archer ( Day-Lewis ) must deny his passion for Ellen ( Pfeiffer ) and endure a quiet life of repression and longing. The film charts their divided loyalties and the painful sacrifice that Ellen and Archer must make, as bound by their conscience, in order to comply with their social and family duties. Cape Fear A remake of a 1962 movie, updated for the 90’s. Sam Bowden ( Nick Nolte ) is a small town lawyer who years earlier had hid a vital piece of evidence from client Max Cady ( Robert De Niro ) that could have got him acquitted. The psychotic and bible-quoting Cady, now released, decides to go after Bowden and his family to teach him a lesson. Goodfellas Ray Liotta plays Henry Hill, who from a young age idolises the local Gangsters and eventually starts working for local boss Paulie Cicero ( Paul Sorvino ) and works his way up through the ranks, distinguishing himself by doing time in jail rather than grassing on the mob. Robert De Niro plays Jimmy who mentors Hill, and like him is prevented from becoming a fully-fledged member of ‘the family’ because of his Irish/Italian roots. As Hill’s dealings become more reckless, both the mob and the FBI are on his case. Joe Pesci won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Hill’s partner. The Color of Money A follow on from the 1961 movie The Hustler , which starred Paul Newman as Fast Eddie Felson. Banned from playing Fast Eddie has become a front man for young hustlers, one of which Vincent Lauria ( Tom Cruise ) is doing particularly well. As Lauria learns all the tricks of the trade from Eddie and becomes more successful, Eddie gets increasingly jealous of his success and eventually vows to make an honest comeback himself. Paul Newman won a Best Actor Oscar for his stirling performance as a man on a quest for his self respect. Raging Bull Often cited as one of the best American movies of the 1980’s, this was disappointing at the box office. Filmed in black and white, giving it a documentary feel, this is the story of the rise, fall and return of middleweight boxer Jake La Motta ( Robert De Niro ). A very honest appraisal of an essentially unlikable man, the movie had several award nominations including a win for De Niro as Best Actor. Taxi Driver Travis Bickle ( Robert De Niro ) is a late night New York cabby on the brink of self-destruction. Unable to form relationships with anyone, Bickle eventually lands a date with presidential campaign worker Betsy ( Cybil Shepherd ), but ruins his chances when he naively takes her to see a porn film. When this misguided attempt at romance fails, and his efforts to convince teen hooker Iris ( Jodie Foster ) to return to her parents fail, Bickle is tipped over the edge and attempts to rid the streets of the ‘scum’ forever. Mean Streets Charlie ( Harvey Keitel ) is working for his gangster Uncle in Little Italy, New York, despite his religious inclinations, and is probably too nice to become anything in the gangster world. As a penance to himself he takes local wild boy Johnny ( Robert De Niro ) under his wing and aims to get him on the straight and narrow but Johnny continues to get deeper and deeper in trouble threatening himself, Charlie and Charlie’s girlfriend Teresa ( Amy Robinson ). The movie had elements of autobiography for Scorsese , in his first big success establishing his directorial talents and the acting ability of De Niro . Tesco.com © Copyright 2002 last updated .
