He is credited as actor, director, playwright and screen writer and single-handedly changed the face of comedy films during the 1970s. He has at times been compared to Chekhov and has won too many awards to count, including several Oscars. For the definitive Woody Allen movie, check out Annie Hall , a film that pipped Stars Wars to the post for Best Film Oscar can't be bad! Directors... ...Ridley Scott ...Steven Spielberg ...Quentin Tarantino ...Stanley Kubrik ...James Cameron ...Martin Scorsese ...Tim Burton ...John Ford ...Directors Cuts Annie Hall Released in 1977, this film beat Star Wars for Best Picture at the Oscars. Starring Allen as comedy writer Alvy Singer, the film follows his attempt to build a relationship with singer Annie Hall ( Diane Keaton ) after two previous marriages ended in divorce. Just when he’s starting to believe that Annie may be different, her singing career takes off and the subsequent fame that she enjoys eventually destroys the relationship. This is still widely regarded today as one of Allen’s best films. Mighty Aphrodite Writer/Director Allen also plays Lenny, who, dissatisfied with his marriage to Amanda ( Helena Bonham Carter ) and puts all his energies into his adopted son and decides to look for the boys mother. After his initial surprise at finding a prostitute and porn star Linda ( Mira Sorvino ), he decides to play matchmaker with Linda. Bullets Over Broadway Set in the 1920s and written and directed by Allen , this is the story of a playwright ( John Cusack ) who has vowed to be uncompromising in his work. His vow quickly dissolves when a gangster offers financial backing to put his show on Broadway. Unfortunately, also included in the deal is the gangsters wannabe star, no talent girlfriend Olive ( Jennifer Tilly ) and her bodyguard Cheech ( Chaz Palminteri ) who secretly revises the play and much improves it. Husbands and Wives New York couple, Gabe and Judy ( Allen and his then wife Mia Farrow ) are shocked when their friends Jack and Sally ( Sydney Pollack and Judy Davis ) announce that they are separating. This prompts Gabe and Judy to begin examining their own relationship resulting in both of them becoming interested in other people. This is one of the best of Allen’s serious films and is all the more interesting bacause of it’s implied autobiographical nature – Allen and Mia Farrow announced their plans to separate shortly before the films release. Radio Days Set in World War II Brooklyn, this is the coming of age story of Jewish boy Joe ( Seth Green ) who has become obsessed with owning The Masked Avenger Secret Decoder Ring as highlighted in his favourite radio story of superhero The Masked Avenger. When Joe and his friends spend all the money they have been saving for Israel on buying the ring, his mother and the local Rabbi are horrified. The story also highlights the behind the scenes lives of the radio performers, really bringing the era back to life. A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy Based on Ingmar Bergman’s Smiles of a Summer’s Night and Jean Renoir’s Rules of the Games , this tells the story of Andrew ( Allen ) who is having sexual problems with his wife Adrian ( Mary Steenburgen ). Whilst hosting a wedding party at their summer house, Adrian and Andrew enjoy the company of Andrew’s cousin Leopold ( Jose Ferrer ) and his wife Ariel ( Mia Farrow ), the ladies man Maxwell ( Tony Roberts ) and his ditzy date Dulcy ( Julie Hagerty ) and the party soon turns into a partner swapping weekend. Hannah & Her Sisters According to the words of one critic this film ‘established Woody Allen as the urban poet of our anxiety-ridden age’, this is an enchanting story about the life and loves of Hannah ( Mia Farrow ) and her sisters Holly ( Dianne Weist ) and Lee ( Barbara Hershey). Michael Caine plays Hannah’s rock star manager husband Elliot, although Elliot has always had a soft spot for Lee, who is living with a snobbish artist Frederick ( Max Von Sydow ). Holly always picks the wrong man and is currently dating TV producer Mickey ( Allen ) who is convinced he is going to die, and who was once married to Hannah. Crimes & Misdemeanors A successful combination of two stories, one funny and one serious. Dr Judah Rosenthal ( Martin Landau ) is every bit the family man but hides a dark secret: his mistress Dolores ( Angelica Huston ). When Dolores becomes more demanding Dr Rosenthal tries to end the relationship but is scared Dolores will tell his wife. Meanwhile filmmaker Cliff ( Allen ) if forced to make a TV documentary about his famous but loathsome brother in law just to pay the rent. Sweet & Lowdown Before gaining recognition as a jazz guitarist in the 1930s, Emmet Ray ( Sean Penn )had made his way in the world as a pimp, enjoying the fast women, fancy clothes lifestyle. Then Emmet meets shy mute Hattie ( Samantha Morton )who makes a living doing other peoples laundry, and all that changes. However, unable to stay faithful to Hattie, Emmet moves on to Blanche ( Uma Thurman ) but is she as incapable of fidelity as Emmet and he soon regrets leaving the lovely Hattie. The Purple Rose of Cairo A unique comic fantasy in which the deeply unhappy Cecelia ( Mia Farrow ) becomes obsessed with the latest release at the cinema and goes every day to see it. On one such day, the main character in the movie Tom Baxter ( Jeff Daniels ) climbs out of the movie and takes a seat next to Cecelia. The other characters in the movie are unable to proceed with the film and begin to talk to the audience. Cecelia takes Tom on a tour of the town and he falls in love with her. With a similar thing happening in cinemas all over the country, the movie executives must find the escaped actor and put him back in the film. Tesco.com © Copyright 2002 last updated .
