Renowned for controlling every aspect of making a movie (and credited as Screenwriter, Producer and Director on all his films bar a few), Kubrik has worked in all different genres and has become something of a cult figure, a status fuelled by the mystery that surrounds him personally. After his death in 1999 he left A.I. Artificial Intelligence incomplete but this was finished by his friend Steven Spielberg . Check out our selection of his best work and if you don't already own The Shining then you most definately should! Directors... ...Ridley Scott ...James Cameron ...Quentin Tarantino ...Steven Spielberg ...Woody Allen ...Martin Scorsese ...Tim Burton ...John Ford ...Directors Cuts Eyes Wide Shut Starring the then married Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman , as a rich couple who are both tempted by adultery during a Christmas party. When Alice ( Kidman ) reveals that she was tempted by a stranger and has had fantasies about him, William ( Cruise ) begins to actively explore some of his sexual fantasies. William learns about an unusual sexual group and decides to attend one of their ‘meetings’, but he soon discovers he is way over his head and his actions threaten his marriage, self-respect and life. Shrouded in secrecy during its production on a closed set, there was already considerable hype for this movie before its release, which received mixed reviews when it opened. Definitely worth a look if only to imagine just how much more was cut out of the film than was included. Full Metal Jacket A Vietnam war movie which separates to initially show the boot camp training the new marines must endure, and then shows how this dehumanised training effects them when they’re on the battlefields of Vietnam. The boot camp drill instructor Sgt. Hartmen was played by real life drill instructor R. Lee Ermey , and is all the more terrifying as a result. The Shining An adaptation of the Stephen King novel, in which Jack Torrance ( Jack Nicholson ) becomes the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel to get away from it all and rid him of his writer’s block. Taking his wife Wendy ( Shelley Duval ) and psychic son Danny ( Danny Lloyd ), the family retreat to the haunted house for some solitude, where Jack is informed by the manager that the previous caretaker went mad and killed his family. Jack doesn’t think it is a problem but when Danny starts to see gruesome images shown to him by ‘the shining’, and Jack meets Mr Grady, the former manager who killed his family, things start to get really nasty. A.I. Artificial Intelligence This movie began as a long term project of Stanley Kubrik’s which, after his death, passed to Spielberg . It’s Pinnochio style is based on a Brian Aldiss short story written in 1969, 'Super-Toys Last All Summer Long'. Set in the future where mankind is reliant on robots, David ( Haley Joel Osment ) is a prototype robot, being the first of his kind to be able to experience love. When Henry ( Sam Robards ) and his wife Monica ( Frances O’Connor ) finally accept that their comatose son is unlikely to wake up they decide to adopt David. All is well until their natural son suddenly recovers and David is abandoned and becomes determined to become a real boy. The story of his adventures follow (with an excellent performance by Jude Law as fellow robot Gigolo Joe) but rather than resulting in the sentimental happy ending we might expect it crosses into examining the darker side of human existence and the result is unpredictable and eccentric. A Clockwork Orange A gang of teenagers are causing havoc, out on the rampage every night raping and murdering innocents that get in their way. After Alex ( Malcolm McDowell ) tries to quell an uprising in the gang he is beaten and left for the police to find him. To secure his freedom Alex agrees to be a guinea pig for the experimental Ludovico treatment, which rids criminals of the urge to engage in violence by making them feel ill at the thought of it. Released from prison and virtually defenceless Alex must face his previous victims who are all too happy to seek revenge. Kubrik withdrew the film from general release in 1971 until after his death, as the shocking scenes of violence had caused controversy and there were several instances of copycat crimes in the UK. Despite this the movie received 3 Oscar nominations in the year of release. 2001: A Space Odyssey A joint venture with science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke made in 1968, and way ahead of its time. The film is in four ‘movements’ – the dawn of man is when the first monolith appeared and it marked the introduction of weapons. We then skip forward to the 21st Century to a space ship orbiting earth and the appearance of strange object on the moon – a black monolith that points to a destination near Jupiter. A crew are sent to Jupiter to investigate but when their human-like computer system HAL makes an error and decides to kill the crew, only one astronaut survives and has to destroy HAL to survive. He is then left alone to investigate what awaits him at the Jupiter destination. Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb A black comedy about what happens when the wrong person is in charge. US Air Force General Jack Ripper has gone mad and ordered a squadron to use nuclear weapons to destroy Russia. The Russians then reveal that if they are hit by nuclear weapons they will unleash the ‘Doomsday Device’ that will destroy the entire planet. Peter Sellers takes on the roles of the three men who could stop this – the former Nazi genius Dr Strangelove, British Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, and US President Merkin Muffley. Will the bombers succeed in blowing up Russia or will they be stopped just in time? Spartacus An epic Roman empire movie made in 1960, starring Kirk Douglas as the slave Spartacus, who is sold to the gladiator school owner Brutus. Varinia is then sold to Crassus, prompting Spartacus to begin a revolt that quickly builds into an army of escaped slaves who will fight to the death to secure their freedom. Paths of Glory An anti-war film set in World War I. French General Broulard orders his troops to attack ‘Ant Hill’, heavily protected by the Germans, knowing they are entering certain death but keen to enhance his own reputation. Kirk Douglas plays Colonel Dax who must lead the charge on Ant Hill.
