His feature length directorial debut, The Duellists in 1977, received critical acclaim winning Best First Feature at Cannes Film Festival. Known as the actors’ Director, Scott has a sumptuous visual style, perhaps something you would expect from someone who started out as a set designer. Our favourite is the multi award winning epic Gladiator starring the gorgeous Russell Crowe . Directors... ...James Cameron ...Steven Spielberg ...Quentin Tarantino ...Stanley Kubrik ...Woody Allen ...Martin Scorsese ...Tim Burton ...John Ford ...Directors Cuts Gladiator When the ageing Roman Emperor is dying he choses his key adviser and popular army general Maximus ( Russell Crowe ) to succeed him over his son Commodus ( Joaquin Pheonix ) but following the emperors death this leads to a power struggle which Maximus loses, leaving his family condemned to death whilst he is sold into slavery. Forced to become a Gladiator to survive, his fighting skills serve him well and he soon becomes famous for his skills in the arena and begins to challenge the Emperor, believing he can insight the people to overthrow the evil Emperor. Hannibal Follow up to Silence of the Lambs based on the novel by Thomas Harris . Whereas Silence of the Lambs was all the more scary because of what was left to the imagination, this sequel is less scary because of what is shown. Anthony Hopkins returns as Dr. Lecter, although it is Julianne Moore who plays Clarice Starling this time around. Whilst not as ground breaking as Silence of the Lambs , this is still scary enough and gruesome enough to be worth a look. Black Hawk Down Based on the true story of the little-known American intervention in the civil war in Somalia, where a group of US rangers are dropped by helicopter into the capital city to capture two leading figures in the local warlords organisation. When two of the US helicopters are shot down, the troops stay to try and recover them and are quickly surrounded, resulting in a 15 hour epic gunfight – the longest battle involving US troops since Vietnam. G.I. Jane This is the ultimate girl power movie. Lt. Jordan O’Neil ( Demi Moore ) is selected as a test case for women in combat and has to struggle through the all male 60% fail rate Navy Seals training programme. Master Chief John James Urgayle ( Viggio Mortensen ) is the hard as nails training instructor who literally comes to blows with O’Neil as part of a training exercise. O’Neil has to prove herself again and again and the political sub plot almost results in her leaving just as she is getting somewhere, but it is only when a real mission occurs that O’Neil finally wins the day. Thelma & Louise Thelma ( Geena Davis ) plays an abused and neglected wife whose best friend Louise ( Susan Sarandon ) is a bored waitress. When the two decide to escape small town life for a brief vacation they run into trouble when Louise shoots and kills a man attempting to rape Thelma, forcing the two women to go on the run. An excellent modernisation of classic road movies with strong and defiant women taking over the lead roles, and a brief but memorable appearance by Brad Pitt as Thelma’s one night stand. Alien Crew of a mining ship Nostramo are awoken from hypersleep by a strange signal coming from a nearby planet. Believing the signal to be an SOS Ripley ( Sigourney Weaver ) and crew go to investigate and discover a derelict alien ship and no surviving crew. One of the crew members is attacked by a strange creature but soon recovers and the crew and ship begin their journey home thinking all is well, only to discover that their troubles have only just begun… Black Rain Suspected of dipping into confiscated drug money, New York vice cop Nick Conklin ( Michael Douglas ) is out of favour with his bosses, and his ex wife doesn’t like him much either. He is assigned, with partner Charlie Vincent ( Andy Garcia ) to escort Japanese mafia boss Matsuda back to Japan to stand trial. Upon arrival in Japan they are tricked into releasing their prisoner and must deal with the Yakuza, the Japanese mafia, in order to get their prisoner back. Someone to Watch Over Me Dazzling socialite Claire ( Mimi Rogers ) is the sole witness to a mob murder and is offered police protection. When happily married New York cop Mike ( Tom Berenger ) is assigned to protect her he doesn’t realise that this will turn his life upside down. Falling in love with the woman he is protecting, Mike risks his marriage and his job. Legend A fantasy fairy tale in which the evil Darkness plans to kill all the unicorns in the world and turn day to night forever. The lowly forest boy Jack ( Tom Cruise ) and his friends vow to save the world and the fairy Princess Lili ( Mia Sara ), who Darkness has kidnapped and vowed to make his wife. Against all odds Jack battles to save the world and falls in love with Princess Lili whilst he's at it. Blade Runner Retired LA cop Rick Deckard ( Harrison Ford ) is forced back into service to track down some rogue replicants – human like androids used to service space colonies. Five of these replicants have escaped from one of the colonies and hijacked a ship back to Earth and Deckard must intercept and terminate these human clones. Although not an instant success at the box office this has become a cult classic and an essential part of any DVD collection. Tesco.com © Copyright 2002 last updated .
