Even if you're not ready to take the plunge with Windows 2000, content creators running Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0 can also achieve up to 54.9% better performance with a RAM upgrade. Assuming that most content creators have fairly high-end systems already in place, Crucial tested the Content Creation 2000 benchmark on an Athlon® 800 system and a Pentium® III 533B system each with a minimum of 64MB of RAM. The Content Creation program tests system performance in a multi-tasking environment using Adobe Photoshop 5.0., Adobe Premiere 5.1, Macromedia Director 7.0, Macromedia DreamWeaver 2.0, Netscape Navigator 4.6, and Sonic Foundry Sound Forge 4.5. Windows 98 Within the Windows 98 operating system, the most impressive results were gained with the Athlon 800 processor running at 1024x768x32 resolution. On this system, upgrading from 64MB to 256MB yielded a 38.7% improvement. In addition, going from 256MB to 320MB gained 6.6% and 256MB to 384MB gained 7.4%. Overall, the systems tested averaged a 31.4% increase by upgrading from 64MB to 256MB. Performance continued to improve beyond 256MB, though at less noticeable levels. Windows NT 4.0 SP5 RAM upgrades in systems running Windows NT 4.0 gave even better results than the Windows 98 systems. Again, the best results were gained with the Athlon 800 chip, which experienced a 54.9% performance increase when upgraded from 64MB all the way up to 384MB. The same upgrade gave an increase of up to 44.9% the Pentium III system. Upgrading from 64MB only to 256MB resulted in improvements ranging from 25% to 40.8% Our recommendation You will see the most dramatic performance increases if you upgrade to Windows 2000 and upgrade your RAM to 256MB. If you aren't ready to make the switch to Windows 2000, you can still see performance gains by upgrading to 256MB. If you're a heavy user, you may want to consider going even higher.
