Description: How much memory can I use with Intel's 430TX chipset? Solution: Intel's 430TX chipset will accept up to 256MB of memory, but only 64MB is cacheable, which can hamper your system's performance. The problem is an insufficient amount of TAG RAM. In order to understand this problem, you first need to understand the way that TAG, L2 cache, and your RAM work together. When your processor is looking for a particular piece of data, it first checks your L2 cache. If it finds the data it needs, you have a "cache hit" and the data is retrieved from your cache. If your processor does not find the data it needs, you have a "cache miss," and the processor then looks for the information in your RAM. When it finds the data it's looking for in RAM, your system writes the data to your L2 cache and puts the address for the data in your TAG. (Your TAG operates as a sort of glossary or address book for the information in your L2 cache.) Your cache is much faster than your RAM (5-16ns for cache, 40-100ns for RAM), so storing frequently used data in your L2 cache helps your system to operate faster. The problem with installing more than 64MB of RAM in a system using this chipset is that the TAG cannot store addresses beyond the first 64MB. This is a considerable problem because your system does not store information in your DRAM sequentially. As the name "Random Access Memory" implies, information is written to your DRAM at random. If information happens to be located beyond the first 64MB of memory, it's address cannot be stored in your TAG. This forces your computer to access your RAM in order to find this data, handicapping your system's performance. Policies Warranty Legal Security © 2004 Micron Technology, Inc.
