Let's face it, even for committed petrol-heads - and I enjoy my driving - the shortest distance across London can be a real drag. My old work route, from Kingston-upon-Thames to Ealing (a shade under nine miles) once took two hours. I'd seriously considered swapping four wheels for two that day but discretion always proved the better part of valour when faced with the thought of a gruelling 18-mile round trip and that strange, clammy sweat that only cycling seems to produce. Despite the protestations of my partner - keen on keeping the spare tyre round my waist roadworthy - I found the idea of getting the vintage Marin out of the shed fairly easy to resist. This time, though, there could be no excuses. The health drive, sorry, cycle would start here. It couldn't be simpler. My route would start off downhill, passing my son's nursery for the morning drop-off (what a great father and son bonding exercise that would be - junior on the back while dad strives to keep the pair of us upright).
