EU legislation prohibits us, and other retailers, from collecting or receiving used fridges, freezers or fridge-freezers. The reasons why we have been obliged to discontinue this service are explained below. We very much regret any inconvenience caused to our customers. Remember it is illegal to dump these products . Your local authority is obliged to collect or receive old refrigeration appliances from residents (although some councils charge for collection). Click here to find your local authority details In January 2002 the Government implemented phase 2 of EC Regulation 2037/2000. This requires CFC gases to be removed from the foam in fridge and freezer walls and doors before their disposal. This adds to the current requirement, to remove CFCs from fridge compressors. Currently, there are no facilities in the UK to remove the CFCs from foam. Recycling companies estimate that it could be upto a year before suitable processing plants can be installed in the UK. We and our contractors collect approximately 300,000 used fridges and freezers from customers each year. Neither Currys or our disposal contractors have storage facilities to hold the products until the processing plants are available, Our contractors believe the expense of doing so would make their business non-viable. That's why they have informed us that they can no longer collect or recycle refrigerated products on our behalf. This means we have No Choice but to withdraw our collection service for used refrigeration products until further notice. While we wholly support legislation to protect the environment, we are dismayed that this law is being implemented before it is possible for waste recycling companies to comply with it. Indeed many recycles businesses are now threatened. We are working closely with Government and local authorities to help them find a solution as soon as possible.
