( Details ) ISBN: 0771082606 Published: October 2002 | Published by McClelland & Stewart From the Publisher Ever dream of selling up and running away to sea? Diane Stuemer and her husband, Herbert, were once a typical suburban couple entering middle age, with a comfortable home and three boys under twelve. A year later they had sold their business, rented out their house, and were setting out to circumnavigate the globe in a 40-year-old yacht. Their entire sailing experience consisted of six afternoons on the Ottawa River. Over the next four years, squeezed into quarters no bigger than the Stuemers’ old bedroom, the family of five would become seasoned mariners. They would battle deadly storms at sea and evade real-life pirates. Dodge waterspouts and lightning strikes and witness the bombing of the USS Cole. See the staggering beauty of Borneo’s rainforest, and its destruction from logging. Be arrested at gunpoint and entertained like visiting royalty. In all, they would visit 34 countries and cover 35,000 nautical miles. Almost everywhere they went, the family made lasting friendships. They learned to trust each other and embrace opportunity, and in Kenya they learned the true meaning of humanity. As Northern Magic pushed onward, many thousands followed the family’s progress in Diane’s dispatches to the Ottawa Citizen, and thousands more turned out to cheer when the amazing Stuemers came home. About the Author Diane Stuemer lives in Ottawa with her husband, Herbert, and their three boys, Michael, Jonathan, and Christopher. Their voyage has led them to a lifelong commitment to activism and humanitarian work. Reader Reviews Average Reader Review: Number of Reviews: 1 1. A Wonderful Journey Reviewer: Brian Holmes from Ottawa Date: 12/5/2002 8:19:51 AM The Voyage of the Northern Magic is an excellent book. It is always interesting and informative and never boring. The book is well written and describes the high and low points of the Stuemers' four year voyage around the world. It is particularly interesting to observe the growth the family experienced during their exciting, adventourous journey and to see how their philosophy of life was changed by the voyage. The book is an excellent read for the armchair travellor. Amazon Canada - Always the best prices!

The Seattle Times, August 03, 2002: Toronto - Indigo Books & Music and a group representing Canada's independent booksellers said they will challenge in court a government decision letting Amazon.com set up a Canadian Web site. Indigo, Canada's largest book chain, and the Canadian Booksellers Association said Amazon.com has violated rules that bar non-Canadians from controlling bookstores. Seattle-based Amazon.com is paying Assured Logistics, a unit of government-owned Canada Post, to run a Toronto-area warehouse and deliver books, music and movies ordered through the month-old Canadian site, Amazon.ca. That way, Amazon doesn't operate a bookstore in Canada. "The Heritage Department has confirmed Amazon.ca is operating in accordance with Canadian laws," said company spokeswoman Kristin Schaefer.
