| Ages 6-8 These are the transition years, when kids will enjoy “a chapter a night” bedtime stories and will begin reading on their own. Children who are old enough to read by themselves are at greatest risk of abandoning books—great stories at these ages reflect social situations kids can identify with, like problems with siblings, friends or parents and things that happen at school. As a general rule, especially for reluctant readers, the funnier the better! The Giggler Treatment Author: Roddy Doyle When biscuit-tester Mr. Mack punishes his sons unfairly, he sets himself up for a smelly trick played by elfin creatures that defend the dignity of kids everywhere! The Adventures of Captain Underpants Author: Dav Pilkey Grade-school pranksters George and Harold hypnotize their mean old principal, transforming him into their own comic-book hero! Charlotte's Web Author: E. B. White A small brown spider and a runty pig make an unlikely team that succeeds against the odds and offers an enduring lesson about the nature of true friendship. Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang Author: Mordecai Richler Imprisoned on Slimer’s Isle for unwittingly insulting a grownup, Jacob learns the terrible secret of the fearsome wrestler warden. A Canadian classic. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Author: Roald Dahl A fantastic field trip through Willy Wonka’s mysterious candy factory also turns out to be a test of character, with hilarious results! Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing Author: Judy Blume Peter Hatcher’s two-year-old brother is what people politely call “a handful.” How can Peter compete with an attention hog like Fudge? Bunnicula: A Rabbit Tale of Mystery Author: James Howe Doggy-narrator Harold is suspicious of the new pet rabbit. Bunnicula seems harmless ... but what about the fangs, the cape, the vegetables sucked dry? James and the Giant Peach Author: Roald Dahl When an orphaned boy accidentally spills the crystals on his wicked aunts' withered peach tree, he sets an amazing adventure in motion. Little House on the Prairie Author: Laura Ingalls Wilder The first in a series chronicling the hardships and triumphs of an American family in the late 1800s, this is an engaging look at pioneer life through the eyes of a little girl. Stuart Little Author: E. B White He may not be big, but he’s small—this beloved story of a mouse born to humans challenges notions of friendship and what makes a family. Judy Moody Author: Megan McDonald Third grade is looking pretty grim for Judyuntil she begins the “Me Project,” a crazy collage assignment that transforms Judy’s mad-face into something better. The Seattle Times, August 03, 2002: Toronto - Indigo Books & Music and a group representing Canada's independent booksellers said they will challenge in court a government decision letting Amazon.com set up a Canadian Web site. Indigo, Canada's largest book chain, and the Canadian Booksellers Association said Amazon.com has violated rules that bar non-Canadians from controlling bookstores. Seattle-based Amazon.com is paying Assured Logistics, a unit of government-owned Canada Post, to run a Toronto-area warehouse and deliver books, music and movies ordered through the month-old Canadian site, Amazon.ca. That way, Amazon doesn't operate a bookstore in Canada. "The Heritage Department has confirmed Amazon.ca is operating in accordance with Canadian laws," said company spokeswoman Kristin Schaefer.
