As Julilly spends her days huddled in the trader's cart travelling south or working on the brutal new plantation, she dreams of freedom. So when workers from the underground railway offer to help Julilly and her friend in Underground to Canada , they eagerly agree to enter a new country, praying the slave catchers and their dogs won't stop them. From the Publisher "There’s a place the slaves have been whisperin’ around called Canada. The law don’t allow no slavery there. They say you follow the North Star, and when you step onto this land you are free..." Taken away from her mother by a ruthless slave trader, all Julilly has left is the dream of freedom. Every day that she spends huddled in the trader’s cart travelling south, or working on the brutal new plantation, she thinks about the land where it is possible to be free, a land she and her friend Liza may reach some day. So when workers from the "underground railway" offer to help the two girls, they are ready. But the slave catchers and their dogs will soon be after them. Barbara Smucker was born in a small prairie town in Kansas in 1915 and attended school there through university. Her careers have been numerous. They include newspaper reporter, high school teacher and librarian. She is the author of numerous award-winning novels, including Runaway to Freedom, Days of Terror and Incredible Jumbo. She lives in Buffton, Ohio. Reader Reviews Average Reader Review: Number of Reviews: 11 1. Amazing Reviewer: Agnes from Hamilton Date: 1/20/2003 7:39:56 PM When I first read it I thought it was going to be boring but as soon as I got into it I thought it was the most amazing thing. I stayed up late reading it because I couldn't put it down. A very well written book. 2. Fair Reviewer: Kelsey from Winnipeg, Manitoba Date: 5/22/2002 12:26:06 PM It was a very sad book at times, and I enjoyed it so much I read ahead (during class). I didn't rate it 5, because I thought that the ending was a little quick. 3. Underground to Canada Reviewer: Alaina from Niagara Fall. Ontario. Canada Date: 5/25/2001 10:07:23 AM Underground to Canada is an amazing book. I could read this book over again. It tells you about the history of two young slaves escaping to Canada long ago. The only thing I didn't like about this book is how people were being misstreated. I recommend this book to others. 4. Almost Excellent Reviewer: Hailey from Niagara Falls.Ontario.Canada Date: 4/18/2001 10:06:18 AM I loved this book. It was very interesting and I would read it again. I gave this book a rank of 4 because I didn't like the fact that the writer was using the word nigger. I don't like that word. I think that it is racist. Couldn't the author use another word insted of that?. Besides that, the book was great, and I think that all grade fives and sixs should read it. 5. Underground to Canada Reviewer: Shama Krishan from Vancouver,BC,Canada Date: 4/16/2001 12:27:48 AM This book was a great book I recomend this book to people who like to read novels about Canadas history and also people who like to read books about racism or people who are against racism and want to see how white people treated black people back in the olden days.I think that anybody who reads this book will start loving it right away and will not want to put it down. When people read this book they will want to stop racism desperately just like I have. This is a really good book for people to read. This book is not only an interestin book, but it also teaches you about Canadas history so you can also learn alot from this book.I dont want to tell you at all about this book beacause I do not want to spoil it for you until you read it.So sit back and enjoy.I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did,and also that you learn as much as I did. The Seattle Times, August 03, 2002: Toronto - Indigo Books & Music and a group representing Canada's independent booksellers said they will challenge in court a government decision letting Amazon.com set up a Canadian Web site. Indigo, Canada's largest book chain, and the Canadian Booksellers Association said Amazon.com has violated rules that bar non-Canadians from controlling bookstores. Seattle-based Amazon.com is paying Assured Logistics, a unit of government-owned Canada Post, to run a Toronto-area warehouse and deliver books, music and movies ordered through the month-old Canadian site, Amazon.ca. That way, Amazon doesn't operate a bookstore in Canada. "The Heritage Department has confirmed Amazon.ca is operating in accordance with Canadian laws," said company spokeswoman Kristin Schaefer.
